Dream Month: February 2013

February is one of those confusing months. It’s cold, dark and dreary (at least here in Montreal), but it’s also a passionate month – Valentine’s anyone? Whether or not you’re a fan of the holiday, there are lots of other things going on in the world that will make you swoon. In my dreams, I get to check out the following events in February 2013:

.

Mons, Belgium
The International Love Film Festival
Feb 24th – March 2nd 2013

FIFA-Mons
The International Love Film Festival brings together over 100 full length films from around the world – all celebrating the theme of Love. But FIFA presents more than just the standard ‘The Notebook’ variety of romances, and there’s a mix of commercial film, independent film and guest speakers throughout the festival. That said, if the films don’t do it for you, perhaps the Belgian beer and chocolate will get you in the mood?

Madrid, Spain
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
The Art of Cartier
Until February 17th

Few things in this world make my heart skip a beat like Cartier. Beyond the shimmer and shine of diamonds, the artistry of the company’s pieces is breathtaking. In the photo above, the Kingfisher brooch and its original design sketch from 1941 show the designers’ ability to mix different gemstones and techniques in order to create not just jewellery – but objets d’art.

Peabody, Massachusetts
Peabody Essex Museum
Hats – An Anthology by Stephen Jones
“I better hurry for this one!” Through until February 3rd

I remember going to Peabody, MA during summer holidays when I was a kid, so was very pleasantly surprised when I saw that the Peabody Museum has brought – and continues to bring – strong fashion and art exhibitions to the area. The Hats  - An Anthology by Stephen Jones exhibition was organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and under the guidance of master milliner and designer Stephen Jones brings together a wide variety of headwear from across eras. There’s an interesting interview with Stephen Jones on the Peabody Museum site – so just in case you can’t make it to the exhibit, you can still get a fashion fix.

Montreal, Quebec
Montreal Symphony Orchestra
Denis Matsuev & the Rachmaninoff Third Concerto
Thursday February 28th & Saturday March 2nd

Sergei Rachmaninoff

Classical music is something I’ve only started getting interested in within the last six months or so. Despite a childhood filled with ballet and violin, I never really connected with the genre. This past November I attended a concert at the Louvre Auditorium by Guillaume Vincent, and he played a selection of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff pieces. I don’t know much about the music, but I know that when the Rachmaninoff piece was being played it was powerful and moving and passionate. The Montreal Symphony Orchestra performances in February and March are nearly sold out, and I’m still unsure about the splurge on the ticket, but perhaps this part of my Dream Month will be a reality.

What do you have planned for February? Any dream destinations or events?

    • I’ve actually made it a point to NOT watch The Notebook. I cry super easily, and just know I’d be reduced to a blubbering pile of mush if I attempted it… I know my limits!
