“The year was 1999…”
We’ll just let that sink in for a moment…
Ready?
The year was 1999 and I was finding my feet as a fashion rebel. A few months away from finishing high school, I had decided to add some fun to my course load by taking a Fashion Arts class. I figured that if I were pushing myself through advanced chemistry and calculus, I should have something a bit more entertaining mixed in.
Early in the semester, we had a project to design a dress for a semi-formal event. (The school had semi-formal dances every December) I drew inspiration from Whale’s ‘Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe’ video (as one does…) and presented a sketch of a gingham dress, accessorized with a cowboy hat.
The feedback from the teacher? “No one would ever wear a cowboy hat to a semi-formal”
Challenge accepted!
I procured a black cowboy hat, found a sequined tube top at the thrift store and got to work making myself a high-waisted, floor length fake leather skirt…
et voila!

Me, circa 1999. Pre-digital.
I loved this outfit. Loved.
And the best part? The Fashion Arts teacher was a chaperone at the dance, and even she had to admit that yes, people wear cowboy hats to semi-formals…and yes, it can be a good look.
.
What are some of your fashion rebel stories?
Oh! Its so much fun to prove your vision right to someone ! The cowboy hat did indeed look great !
