“Love is in the air – Everywhere I look around. Love is in the air – Every sight and every sound.”
To mark Valentine’s week (I am a hopeless romantic, afterall) I thought I’d round up some of the fashion world’s love stories.
Some couples may be surprising matches, others have become partners in life as well as work, and some have flown under the radar for quite a while – but whatever their story, each of these couples celebrates a very fashionable love.
Garance Doré and Scott Schuman
Garance and Scott are, without a doubt, the sweethearts of the fashion blogger world. An accomplished illustrator turned blogger, Garance brings a bubbly and energetic je ne sais quoi to her work, while the more stoic (though still quite funny) photographer Scott continues to capture the best of street style no matter where in the world he is. A couple since 2008, Garance and Scott are now collaborators as well, having lead campaigns for Tiffany, and earning the CFDA Eugenia Sheppard Award in 2012. Their love story of boy meets girl, boy gives girl a better camera, boy and girl create blogging magic is endearing – and inspiring.
Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller
Designer Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller wed in 2001…26 years after first meeting. Despite initially wanting to be friends with media mogul Diller, Diane admitted to Harper’s Bazar that “[they] were completely taken over by passion, and it was completely, utterly unexpected on both sides.” This enduring love sets a wonderful example for what can come your way if you both allow yourself to be swept away by passion that comes your way – and be patient enough to not rush a good thing.
Tom Ford and Richard Buckley
Designer Tom Ford and fashion journalist (and former Editor in Chief of Vogue Hommes International) Richard Buckley have been together for 25 years. After first meeting at a fashion show, and being wooed on an elevator ride, Tom and Richard kept their relationship low-key for years, and it came as quite a surprise to many when they announced the birth of their son in 2012. I think that this fashion pairing shows how powerful a love can be, even if not shouted from the rooftops and flaunted in the public eye.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana
After over 20 years together as co-designers, business partners and a couple, Domenico and Stefano announced their split in 2005. The duo have continued to work together, and remain one of the most inseparable design pairings in the industry. Branching out into the restaurant business, the pair are behind Milan eatery ‘Gold’. That Domenico and Stefano continue to collaborate on collections, and even live in the same building despite the end of their romantic involvement speaks volumes of the power of friendship and respect in any relationship.
Make sure to check back on Valentine’s Day – February 14th – for Part 2 of Fashion Love Stories
